Clinical Skills Workshop
by Laura Fralich

On July 20, 2004 St. Christopher’s AMSA chapter facilitated the school’s first-ever Clinical Skills workshop. Approximately sixty students rotated through four individual skill stations: tracheal intubation, blood pressure screening, blood glucose screening, and heart and lung sounds. Taught by former paramedics, medical technicians, nurses, and current professors, participants were introduced to the basics of these essential clinical skills through instruction and hands-on experience. The event was a tremendous success and AMSA hopes to continue providing students with opportunities such as these to improve practical skills prior to immersion in clinical rotations.

Suturing Workshop
by Gena Marie Urrego

On July 13th AMSA hosted their 2nd Suturing Workshop of the year at S.C.C.O.M.. Our very own Dr. Omar (who regularly teaches Introduction to Clinical Medicine) led the workshop and began by teaching the participants the basics of suturing. After his presentation Dr. Omar played videos of real-life operations and the methods doctors use to close incisions. The workshop lasted about an hour and a half. Participants were supplied with their own suturing tools and material on which to practice. The event was again a success and we would like to extend a big “Thank You” to Dr. Omar for all his shared knowledge and efforts!

Summer IV Workshop
by Marc Kim

For the third consecutive semester, AMSA held an I.V. clinic for the St. Christopher’s College of Medicine student body. Turnout for the event was exceptional with more than 40 students attending, representing all 5 basic science semesters. The aim of the clinic was to provide first- and second-year medical students with early instruction and practice of essential clinical skills. The clinic was a success thanks to the help of experienced instructors who were former medical technicians, nurses, and paramedics with extensive first aid training. In light of the high turnout and terrific reception, AMSA hopes to continue offering the I.V. workshop to the students of St. Christopher’s College of Medicine.

Crusaid's Walk for Life
HIV & AIDS Fundraiser
by Laura Fralich

After showing the HIV/AIDS documentary A Closer Walk in late May, the AMSA chapter at St. Christopher’s was compelled to help raise money for Crusaid, the UK’s largest HIV/AIDS fundraising organization.  Many students contributed both their money and time, as they collectively donated approximately 100 pounds ($180) and subsequently participated in Crusaid’s 10K “Walk for Life” through London on June 20.  It was a fantastic experience we hope to be a part of again next year.  If you would like to learn more about Crusaid, please visit their website at http://www.crusaid.org.uk .
