AMSA Activities
by Swapna S. Gummadi
This
semester, the local AMSA chapter at St.
Christopher’s has flourished with
the introduction of many educational and
entertaining activities The kaleidoscope
of events that were implemented this semester
includes movie nights, the IV workshop,
a presentation by Volunteer Resource services,
and two suturing workshops.
The
semester was kicked off with a recruiting
day where new or continuing students that
were not yet AMSA members were able to
apply for membership. Potential applicants
were informed of the benefits that AMSA
has to offer and the important role it
will play in their medical career. At
least 15 new members were recruited on
this day alone with a subsequent addition
of at least 20 more throughout the semester.

Community
service was an important matter for St.
Christopher’s AMSA chapter this
semester. A clothing drive was arranged
for the semester where students or members
of faculty and staff can donate their
used clothing for contribution to the
British Red Cross. A presentation was
held by the Volunteer Resource Services
Bureau for students who are interested
in volunteering for various charities.
Students signed up to do a range of things
from painting a local hospice to working
with young children.

was also a task that the AMSA at St. Christopher’s
took on. Movie nights proved to be a fun
and inexpensive intermediate between renting
a DVD and going to the theatre. Students
and

faculty were able to watch a film for
only £1 and munch on the accompanying
dinner for only £2 total.
Educational
events were also big this semester with
the IV and suturing workshops. These workshops
provided students the opportunity to practice
important procedures that would be essential
to them as practicing physicians. The
IV workshop was instructed by students
who had previous experience as paramedics,
EMTs, and RNs. There were at least 70
students who were eager to learn IV techniques
on this day.

A
special thanks goes out to the students
who instructed this workshop for the St.
Christopher’s chapter. The suturing
workshops were also just as successful.
Each student had their own suturing kit
with material to practice on. The first
suturing workshop was held by Dr. Shawer,
and the second by Dr. Omar. The time and
effort donated by these professors are
appreciated greatly by the AMSA local
chapter. In addition, these events would
not be possible without the St. Christopher’s
administration who kindly donated all
the IV needles and sutures for the workshops.
